Rockdale Intermediate Gifted and Talented students had the opportunity to learn robotic coding. Students took part in the Amazon robotic challenge, attended a training camp and competed in the CoderZ Jr. League Robotics competition.

CoderZ is an online learning environment that engages students and helps them learn robotic coding. By completing different challenges and competitions, students learn coding. Students work at their own pace, work independently, and collaboratively work together in competitions. CoderZ is designed for students of various coding background experiences.

What is coding? Coding is writing a set of instructions that a computer understands so it will perform a task. There are several advantages in learning to code. Coding puts learners in control of the computer and through experimentation develops mastery in sequencing skills, problem solving, cause and effect, logical and critical thinking.

Through this experience, our students have learned to become more resilient and understand how important it is to keep trying and discover new ways to solve issues. Students also learn the significance of paying attention to detail. They learned to focus and analyze situations. Most of all, students discover the value of persistence and patience. In order to see the results they have been waiting for, they have no choice but to become patient.

RIS students were some of the youngest competitors in the Jr. League Competitions. Our students competed against students across the country. Students competed and made it past the preliminary round. Jonah Cox assisted his team to advance to the group round as team leader with the highest contributing score. RIS team placed 3rd in the group round, with first and second place advancing to the final round. Students enjoyed learning and competing. Many students commented that coding helped them learn how to deal with difficult challenges. Jonah Cox and Addison Willingham commented that coding has inspired them to want to become engineers.

After the competition students reflected on their learning. They discovered that through challenges they acquired the most growth and learning. Throughout this competition, life lessons were learned. Students learned that without challenges they don’t get the opportunity to take risks, learn to struggle and pick themselves up again.
