Rockdale Downtown Association’s annual Community Christmas Tree lighting was a big success last Thursday evening with the most attendees to date in the past three years. The delicious chili prepared by the owners and employees of Climate Control AC & Heat was nearly gone by the time the tree was lit, and that has never happened before.
One of the biggest surprises of the night was RHS varsity basketball coaches Sean Lexima and Danielle Forggatt bringing seven members of the boys’ team (Ace Taylor, Charles Murphy, Bryson Weaver, Zander Keller, Chase Nadeau, Jordan Suckow and Jeremiah Watts) and they put those boys to work, allowing the RDA officers to enjoy the evening like never before.
Another surprise was Santa showing up this year just before the tree was lit with his sack of candy, and he was immediately swarmed by children. Some say he was popular local singer Charlie Wyler, but none of the kids believed that, knowing he was the real thing.
Another new feature was DJ Ant (Anthony Cortez) donating his time, talent and equipment playing Christmas music for the crowd putting all in a holiday mood.
Rockdale Police Chief Jerry Meadors, Milam County Sheriff Mike Clore, Cameron Police Chief Lonnie Gosch, Shawn Alexander and Bud Houston served the chili and all the fixings all evening long.
The chili, hot chocolate and cookies at the event were free only because of the generosity of sponsors Rockdale Downtown Association, RIOT, Climate Control, Tripp’s Tavern, Rollo Insurance and the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce.
