Industry loss, cap combine to force tough decisions

It’s far from unexpected but County Judge Dave Barkemeyer has predicted additional tax hikes are in Milam County’s future.
The county lost its largest taxpayer last month when Luminant closed its Sandow 4 and 5 Power Plants near Rockdale.
Barkemeyer noted the county—along with other taxing jurisdictions in Texas—will also have to cope with a proposed 2.5-percent tax cap which will be introduced to next year’s legislative session by Gov. Greg Abbott.
‘IT’S BAD’—Barkemeyer, who is not running for re-election this year, has been out front warning taxpayers of the effects he foresees in the near future.
