At Monday night’s city council meeting, Pct. 3 Justice of the Peace Andy Isaacs was unanimously voted in as interim Municipal Court Judge as current Judge Jerry Waggoner is retiring at the end of the month after 19 years with the city. A going away party for Judge Waggoner will be held on Aug. 30 at city hall.
Two sales pitches were given to the council by Kirby Watson with Enterprise Fleet Management and Emilie Zalfini with Home Service program. The Fleet Management program will save the city over $500,000 by managing the maintenance and selling off of older vehicles from both the police department and the public works department.
The Home Service program is basically insurance for homeowners that residents will be able to opt into to cover broken pipes during winter storms. There is another part of this program which covers water pipe damages which go from residential homes to the city’s water main, the repair payment for which is the responsibility of the homeowner.
RISD Superintendent Dr. Denise Monzingo spoke to the council about House Bill 3 which requires an armed police officer and car at each campus during the school year. This bill also provided some money to pay the officers. One officer has already been hired and is on the job and they are looking for three more. An interlocal agreement between RISD and the city will accomplish this effort and get them paid.
Maggie Martin with East Bell Taphouse came to the council asking for HOT funds for the inaugural Rocktoberfest which will be held on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29-30. The festival will have a market, a kid’s zone, a Czech band on Friday, a beer garden and lots of vendors. On Saturday, there will be all of that, but the live music will include both rock and country bands. The council allotted them $10,000 in HOT funds provided they use a local shop for t-shirts, hats and koozies.
A representative from the Fair Association also asked for HOT funds and were granted $34,400 by the council.
