The Milano Lady Eagles went 0-4 at the Fayetteville Tournament this past weekend.

“We lost all four games,” said Jordan Merkord, MHS girl’s head basketball coach. “But we grew a lot as a team.”

The Lady Eagles lost to Shiner-St. Paul 48-35 on the first day of the tournament. Hannah Batten led Milano with 16 points. Sterling Robertson also scored double-digits with 11 points, and Faith Walton had six.

On Friday, lost 32-28 in a close game to Weimar. Batten, Robertson, and Walton were again scoring leaders with 12, six, and five points. Kristian Taylor also had five points. Later in the day, Milano fell behind early in a 48-30 loss to tourney host Fayetteville. Walton, and Batten were the leading scorers along with Sage LoBue and McKenna Robertson, with four points apiece.

To end the tournament, the Lady Eagles lost in another close game. Losing to class 3A Columbus 39-37. Sterling Robertson and Batten were team leaders with nine points, and Taylor also had six.

Earlier in the week, Milano lost to Rosebud-Lott 49-30. Batten had nine points. Taylor and Walton both had six.

“We have a lot of young players, and they’re doing great,” Merkord said. “It just takes time to develop. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

“By the Columbus game, we really started to put it together, and we played a great game. We’ve played a lot of tough games these past couple of weeks, and we are eager to start district.

The Lady Eagles played Thrall in their district 25-2A opener on Tuesday at home after press time, and play on Friday in Holland against the Lady Hornets. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
