CAMERON—There’s lots happening at the Milam County Railroad Museum in the former J.C. Penney building on the courthouse square, next to the Milam County Treasurer Office,

The museum is displaying a collection of railroad lanterns and is awarding an N-scale model railroad in a fund raiser.

LANTERNS—The lanterns are from the collection of Cameron resident Alan Love and will be on display through the end of May.

Over 30 uniquely different lanterns and on display, according to Jamie Larson, museum coordinator.

Museum hours are Tuesdays and Saturdays, 10 to 4. Admission is free and donations are appreciated, Larson said.

LAYOUT—The fund-raiser prize, currently in the works (see photo above) depicts the Big Bend community of Terlingua in the 1920s.

The 4-by-4-foot layout will have complete scenery, which will include mountains, desert, a cemetery, mines and a lake. All of the track, railroad cars, buildings and transformer are also included. “It will be a turnkey layout that will be ready to plug in and enjoy”, Larson said. Total value will be over $300.

Volunteers are constructing the layout on the second floor of the museum.

“We will be moving it downstairs in a couple weeks”, said Larson. “We encourage everyone to come in and watch the progress and learn how we build these unique dioramas.”

Donation tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20.

Tickets are available at the Railroad Museum on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10-4 or at the nearby Milam County Historical Museum Monday through Saturday during business hours.

“All proceeds will be used for the Railroad Museum’s future projects and activities,” he said .

The Railroad Museum will hold a summer camp for Junior Engineers. “Details will be announced later,” Larson said.
