At Monday night’s city council meeting it was announced that east side councilwoman Michelle Larkin has resigned and is moving to Georgia just weeks before the May 7 election.
Complicating matters is the fact that it is too late to have her name removed from the ballot, which means that a vote for Larkin will be a wasted vote as she will be ineligible to be on the council since she won’t be living in Rockdale anymore.
Larkin was running for reelection against Esmeralda Olivares for the east side seat.
In other news from the meeting Mayor John King read several proclamations including making April Fair Housing Month and National Library Month, April 22 as Rockdale Earth Day, April 24-30 as Crime Victims Rights Week, May 1-8 as National Music Week and the month of May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.
Judy Lankford gave a Section 3 presentation and Don Allman gave the city audit for 2021. Tony Ellis told the council of his plans for an indoor shooting range in Rockdale and an ordinance will be passed so that he can do so.
The council received two bids for the property at 1166 West US 79 and will require each to bring a presentation to the council. One was Ace Hardware and the other was for climate controlled storage and office space.
Denise Monzingo was nominated to finish Ricky Coppedge’s term on the MDD board. Coppedge recently moved to Taylor and is unable to serve as a result.
In executive session Barbara Holly was given her annual review and also included discussion of the city charter regarding councilwoman Larkin.
