The widow of the late Sheriff David Greene, who died July 20 of a heart attack, joined current interim Sheriff Chris White in issuing a statement of appreciation for the support received during Greene’s illness and death.

“There were a lot of people and entities who came together to ensure that David received the honor and respect due of a lawman who had spent over 40 years serving the people of the state of Texas,” Janell Greene said.

“We would like to make certain the people of Milam County and all of our good neighbors who came together to honor David’s return from Oregon know that we thank you beyond words,” she added.

David Greene was stricken while on vacation in that state and died in a Portland, Oregon, hospital.

“There were several emotional moments while passing the hundreds of people lining the route,” Mrs. Greene said. “These wonderful people had so graciously taken the time and patiently waited, in some cases two to three hours, just so they and their children could solemnly hold flags or hands over their hearts as the hearse passed by.”

“That is a true testament of the honor and respect that David earned through his life of service to the people of Texas,” Sheriff White added.

“Since June 26 our family has been blessed with an outpouring of love, support, and kindness from our Milam County community,” Mrs. Greene said.

“With the highest appreciation, we thank all of you for lifting us up during this dark time. Your graciousness has been truly felt and we are consumed with pride knowing we are part of a community filled with such caring people,” she added.

Mrs. Greene and White added special thanks to Williamson County Sheriff Robert Chody and his office, for the honor guard and motorcycle units; and Bell County Sheriff Eddy Lange and his command and support staff.

They also thanked Texas Parks and Wildlife wardens and command, Milam County VFDs, Thrall VFD, Thorn-dale Police Department, Hutto Police Department; Texas Sheriff’s Association; Lee County Sheriff Rodney Meyer and Chief Deputy James Crockett, Investigators with the Office of the Attorney General “and so many more who showed their support or helped us through the past three weeks,” Mrs. Greene said.

“There are so many people from all over who came together and worked diligently to honor Sheriff Greene and we cannot thank them enough, but most of all thank you citizens of Milam County for your love and support. We are truly in your debt,” White said.
