Alvan Liu has received acceptance letters from some very fine schools including Yale, Brown, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, John’s Hopkins and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), and has chosen MIT because they offered a good financial aid package. He will find out soon when he starts at college, and he will study biological engineering and wants to go into medicine.
Liu is the son of Sam and Tina Liu who own the popular China Buffet restaurant in Rockdale.
Alvan said he made his choices of which school to apply for by using a counselor from a group called Matriculate which is run by the University of Notre Dame He will also graduate May 30 from Rockdale High School with an associate’s degree from Temple College where he studied advanced courses in science, anatomy and calculus 1 and 2 which aren’t offered at RHS.
According to Lisa Debault, Alvan’s health science teacher, “Alvan is not only a standout academically, but his community-oriented nature has made him an absolute leader among the student body as well. He took our school’s organization HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) and turned it into the largest organization at Rockdale High School in just three short years. He is prouder of this accomplishment than he is of his multiple college admissions, and this, to me, speaks volumes.”
Readers may remember Alvan’s older brother Kevin who was accepted into Harvard in 2023. They also have another younger son named Levin.
The Liu family emigrated to the United States in 2000, first settling in New York. They came to Texas in 2005 and originally settled in Hearne and opened a restaurant there. They came to Rockdale when their children started school and opened the restaurant here in 2009. The entire family speaks Mandarin at home.
