When workmen tore out the plank floor in the brick building occupied by M.S. Cohn’s dry good store, there was brought to light an old concrete cistern with more than seven feet of water in it. The cistern was situated near the front door and literally thousands of people have walked over its open mouth without knowing of its presence. The floor had become quite rotten, and Mr. Cohn was congratulating himself that nobody had fallen though. The services of the city’s big fire engine pumper were called into play, the cistern pumped dry and the opening in its top closed with concrete before the new floor was laid.

P.B. Wells of Austin, representing the State Board of Health, was in Rockdale in the interest of the mosquito extermination work as carried on in Rockdale for the past three seasons. He estimated that the work could be carried on for approximately $150 and was of the opinion that the best plan was for the city government to take charge of the work and bear the expense.
