Rockdale Public Schools opened the 1919-1920 school year with 50 students in attendance. Officials said the first da ent smoothl ith one big exception. Expected textbooks from the state had not yet arrived for the school term.

Milam County Commissioners opened bids on 24 miles of roadwork around South Milam County and were shocked to find the low bid rate was 80 percent more than the rate under which a road from Rockdale to Tracy was being built. The court re ected all bids.

Rockdale-area farmer L. E. Robbins had an arm broken in five places when it was caught in a hay baler. It was the same machine which crushed the foot of his brother, O. P. Robbins, the previous year.

An 11-month-old baby was killed and four persons were in ured in a four-vehicle pileup on rain-slick U S 79 two and one-half miles west of Rockdale.

City council members okayed a contract with a Dallas firm to construct a new water tower but bids on a new water well came in at double to triple the amount budgeted and the council decided to alter specifications.

A 32-year-old Thorndale man was killed with a shotgun and his 31-year-old wife was arrested and charged with murder.

An escaped bull was the cause of three X : traffic crashes in 50 minutes near Milano. One of the crashes sent a Tyler woman to Richards Memorial Hospital for treatment of a head inj ury along with cuts and bruises.

Richards Memorial Hospital in Rockdale was extending privileges to Cameron physicians after financially problems were threatening the existence of Cameron’s Central Texas Hospital.

Summer heated up as Rockdale police were called to erea up three fijhts tzo of them at the same parking lot within minutes of each other. Two handguns were recovered.

Milam County was listed among the counties tagged as Ëunder emerjenc| condition due to zildfire ris e the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Big Blue was set to play Austin Anderson on the road in only the second Thursday varsity football game in school history. In 1986, the Tigers played A&M Consolidated on a Thursday night out of deference to Hurricane Gilbert, which was expected to come ashore the next day.

The war in Afghanistan came home in a big way to Milam County residents. Army 2nd Lt. Darryn Andrews died from wounds received when enemy forces attacked his vehicle. Lt. Andrews and wife Julie had one son and were expecting a daughter.

Thirteen Milam County employees attended a county commissioners meeting to defend a proposed two-percent pay increase for non-elected officials. Several visitors opposed the increase.

The Rockdale Planning & Zoning Board was set to discuss requests to open up more areas of the city to commercial development.

Waylon Boyd’s fourth-quarter extra point was the difference as Rockdale rallied late to claim a 7-6 victory over Lampasas at Tiger Field.
