100 YEARS AGO....

A Milam County jury handed down a two-year sentence after it found E. L. Ramsey guilty of the murder of A. Teagel Sr. in Thorndale.

There was a new venture in the Tracy Oil Field. Dixie-Winner Company of Temple announced it would sink three wells at once and said “the oil in this field is described as the highest grade of any Texas petroleum today.”

The Rockdale Chamber of Commerce, seeking to upgrade lodging in the city, heard from committee chair W. A. Coffield that 13 extra rooms “had been secured in the Hotel Larrieu.”

The Reporter ran a feature story “Perfumes Are Not Popular in America,” whose headline deck read: “Heavy artificial odors are not needed here, as in Europe.”

FORTY YEARS AGO....

Residents of Copeland Street came before the Rockdale City Council requesting paving and other street improvements.

A concrete slab was poured for the expansion of the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library. The expansion was to triple the size of the current library and triple the structure’s size.

Rockdale Tennis Association members were meeting to plan a Jubilee Days Tennis Tourney for the annual June celebration.

Rockdale’s 1,600-meter relay of Frances Anderson, Lisa DeGhetto, Lydia Gonzales and Sandra Miller pulled off a major upset in winning that event in the district track meet.

TWENTY YEARS AGO....

Milano Rural Water Supply Corporation members were urging creation of a regional water conservation district after learning a Houston firm was leasing water rights in Burleson County.

The Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library’s fund raising effort was still $150,000 short. The library was looking to expand into the adjacent Vogel Building.

The Thorndale City Council canceled a proposed halfcent sales tax election which was to have been held May 6. Money was to have gone toward economic development.

Larry Pipkin’s RHS Tiger baseball team punched its ticket for the Class 3A playoffs with wins over Elgin and Manor.

TEN YEARS AGO....

Adrian Acevedo of Manor was named director of the Rockdale High School Big Blue Band. He replaced Joe Ray.

Rockdale ISD trustees were eyeing several projects, and possible projects including air-conditioning the elementary gym.

The annual South Milam County Relay for Life, held at Tiger Field, raised over $42,000 for cancer education and research.

Led by hurdler Daniel Brooks, the Rockdale Tiger track team won its first district track title in nine years, 13 points better than runner-up Taylor.
