100 YEARS AGO…
Miss Flora Sharp graciously entertained the Matinee Musical Club with a beautiful springtime party. A splendid musical program was well rendered. In the musical game played, Miss Louise Hale was awarded two handmade handkerchiefs. Sweet Peas, ferns and nasturtiums were used in the reception rooms. The menu consisted of chicken sandwiches, olives, cheese straws, daisy salad, fruit salad, candlestick salad and mint iced tea.
Beginning next Sunday the automobile owners in Rockdale who wait until after 10 o’clock to fill up their gas tanks will be in hard lucks, as all local gasoline filling stations have signed an agreement to close up Sunday promptly at 10 o’clock a.m.
The Rockdale Boy Scouts have secured one of the front downstairs rooms at city hall for their headquarters, and under the direction of Scoutmaster Melbert have been busy the past several weeks in renovating it and making it habitable.
40 YEARS AGO…
Teachers of the Milano School District were granted a $1,000 supplement, the first supplements to be paid by the district. “Supplement” is the amount a local district pays teachers above the state base.
Mr. and Miss Rockdale High School for 1981-82, Lisa Coelho and Dennis Brooks, were introduced at the junior-senior prom.
Workmen were drying-in the first of two 6,000-square-foot apartment buildings being erected off Meadow Drive and adjacent to Meadowbrook Baptist Church. Owners of the project were Emma Banks of Austin and Imie May Ledbetter of Houston, daughters of Mrs. Olivia Mullins of Rockdale.
An enthusiastic Rockdale High School student body booed, hissed and cheered as “The Saga of Sagebrush Sal,” a wild west melodrama in two acts, was presented by theater arts teacher Joe Carnley and his students in the RHS auditorium.
20 YEARS AGO…
Kelsey Morgan was valedictorian and Danielle Donnelly salutatorian of the 95-graduate Rockdale High School graduating class of 2002.
Artwork by Tim Hoff and Jamal Williams won best-of-show honors as Rockdale High School hosted its annual Fine Arts Spring Show.
Rockdale’s Crystal Anderson, who participated in the Class 3A state track meet all four years at Rockdale High School and finished her track career with a bronze medal in the 400 meters two weeks ago, had been named a “track all-star” by the state’s girls track coaches.
10 YEARS AGO…
Patrick David was valedictorian and Victoria Drake salutatorian of the 124-candidate Rockdale High School graduating class of 2012.
Rockdale 2022, a “visioning” session to establish goals for the community, was set at the Patterson Civic Center with four entities urging public participation. The Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD), Rockdale Downtown Association, Rockdale Chamber of Commerce and the City of Rockdale were co-sponsoring the meeting.
Not many towns of 6,000 get to have a “world premiere” of a piece of band music, especially not one named for a former resident. That’s what happened at the RHS Auditorium when Jim Perry, former high school and junior-high director in Rockdale, returned to direct the march, ‘Perry’s Legacy,’ during the annual RISD Parade of Bands.
