There are many things vying to grab the attention of our students. Video games have become more and more realistic, and information is right at every student’s fingertips. Now, more than ever before, we have to work hard to have students realize the importance of the classes they are in. In order to engage students we work to show them the relevance of what they are learning as we also work to engage them through many different techniques and hands-on activities.

It has been exciting to see students engaged in their science labs. We have seen students sprinting in the halls as others time them in order to calculate acceleration. We have also seen students studying chemical and physical change by lighting different sugars on fire and watching the ash build up like a snake. Anytime you walk into a classroom and see students having fun, it is a great day.

Education has definitely changed, and I am glad that Rockdale High School can offer so many classes to fit the students’ needs. There are many different pathways that allow hands-on training.

Students can assist teachers in our education pathway, actually working in elementary classrooms. In graphic design, they create advertising products for different groups in our school. Students develop welding skills with opportunities to create and build firepits or other items they would like to construct. In our nursing pathway, students work in our four bed hospital lab and our business information students earn certifications that make them more marketable in the job field.

So while students have changed and require more to engage them, we have worked to meet their needs by offering relevant and engaging hands-on learning in the pathways they are interested in.
