The May 7 city and school board elections are coming up soon and here is a recap of all the races.
ROCKDALE MAYOR—Incumbent Mayor John King is running for re-election against Brett Boren.
CITY COUNCIL EAST WARD—This is one race you will need to pay attention to when voting because one of the people on the ballot has become ineligible. Incumbent city councilwoman Michelle Larkin’s name will be on the ballot, but she has recently resigned and moved to Georgia. It was too late to have her name removed from the ballot. If you want your vote to count, Esmeralda “Esme” Reulas-Olivares is the only viable candidate in this race.
CITY COUNCIL WEST WARD— There are two new candidates on the ballot for this spot which was formerly held by Belinda Hillhouse who is not running for reelection. Braden Wallis and Kyle Walker will vie for this spot.
Brad Caffey is running unopposed for the remaining two years of Brett Boren’s term. Boren had to resign in order to run for mayor.
SCHOOL BOARD PLACE 3—Amy Ogea Casas is running unopposed for this place as trustee.
SCHOOL BOARD PLACE 4—Charles Miles is running unopposed for this place as trustee.
SCHOOL BOARD PLACE 5—Lindsey Lillard and Braden Byrd will vie for trustee for this spot which is being vacated by Wenda Dyer after serving for 12 years.
Early voting begins on Monday, April 25 and ends on Tuesday, May 3. Election day is Saturday, May 7.
Both early and election day voting in Rockdale will be held at the hospital at 1700 Brazos Avenue.
