American playwright Ken Ludwig has been called a comic genius and this summer Milam Community Theater will stage “Baskerville,” his madcap sendup of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes classic.

“This play is a true romp,” said director Richard Stone. “It’s a fast-paced, murderously-funny adventure with twists and turns, silly accents and even sillier disguises. It is an actor’s play, both challenging and absurdly satisfying.”

Ludwig’s transformation of the famous detective story into a comedy is pure brilliance, said Stone. He does it in such a way that preserves the genius and dignity of the iconic Holmes, while simultaneously infusing the script with humor.

It ’s Stone’s task to assemble the cast and crew for the production, which will grace the MCT stage July 29, 30 and Aug. 5 and 6.

The script calls for five actors — four men, one woman — to portray more than 40 different characters, supported by a small crew backstage to help those actors through quick costume changes.

Auditions for the show will be held 7 p.m. June 4 and 5 at the Williams Event Center, 408 S. Columbus Ave. in Cameron. Auditions will include cold readings from the script. It is not necessary to prepare materials in advance.
