East Bell Taphouse, which will be in the building at the corner of Bell and Main streets, got a $10,000 facade grant, from the Municipal Development District at Monday night’s meeting in Rockdale.
The grant is to help the new building owners enhance the historic appearance of the buidling that will one day serve drinks and food.
The building, which was built in the early 1920s, once housed a garage that was owned by the late Buck Henry, a Rockdale civic leader.
The board also went into executive session to discuss legal matters.
When board members returned to open session, they voted to request open records from the state’s attorney general into its findings in the Kara Clore suit against the MDD.
Clore was the MDD executive director until she was fired in October of the past year.
The MDD board also approved sending its budget for the coming fiscal year to the City Council for its approval.
Jim Gibson, the MDD executive director, gave the board a breakdown of the sales tax revenues paid to the MDD from the state’s comptroller office.
He told the board that 70% of the sales tax came from local businesses in Rockdale as opposed to say online orders.
Walmart was reported to be the biggest contributor to the sales tax returns for the district, Gibson said.
Walmart’s contribution is very large, he said, and there is a substantial drop to number two.
