A joint meeting between Rockdale MDD and Rockdale city council was held Tuesday night to discuss the impact that the Sandow Lakes Ranch (SLR) Advanced Manufacturing and Logistics Center will have on Rockdale.

Topics of discussion were water availability, the impact on our schools, the need for more police officers and volunteer firefighters.

City Manager Barbara Holly said, “Rockdale can get to a population of about 10,000 with our current “ Rockdale can get to a population of about 10,000 with our current water system.”

water system.”

After that, new wells and/or deeper wells would need to be dug to handle the new residents. And that is a costly operation.

Both RISD Superintendent Denise Monzingo (who is also on the MDD board) and school board president Troy Zinn were present. Both expressed that the bond election that was held earlier this year wouldn’t cover the extra student population that is coming, but it will get the schools through the next five years. Monzingo said there is a need for RISD to start buying land.

While this was the first of many more meetings between these two groups, all agreed that Rockdale will soon be in a better position than we are now to attract the right businesses to town and make the changes necessary for the growth that is coming.
