The Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD) hired the firm Kimley Horn to come up with a design for the East Cameron Avenue Corridor and it was presented at the Patterson Civic Center at 2 p.m. Monday.
The East Cameron Avenue Corridor goes from the Rockdale Police Department out US 79 to US 77 and the designs offered were an attempt to make this area more attractive.
Jim Patterson (pictured above) with Kimley Horn started the presentation by citing things the City of Rockdale can control such as zoning, platting, right of way widths and parking, and things the city can influence such as visual aesthetics, urban design and enhancement projects.
None of the designs that were submitted will have any effect on what TxDOT is currently doing on their US 79 project, so nothing will have to be torn up or replaced at a later date. The designs are meant to accomplish three things: to transform East Cameron Avenue, to create connected parks and to nurture healthy neighborhoods.
Much of the design concentrated on Bridge Park and how it could be both a useful and highly visible attractive park for the city. There were also challenges about the park such as the proximity to the railroad tracks with train noise and the fact that the park is located in a creek floodplain. The designs offered a community gathering place and outdoor recreation and an option of walking and biking trails.
The city has no immediate plans to do any of the projects in the presentation, but it was noted that the ideas could be a long-term goal for Rockdale.
