At Monday night’s Rockdale Municipal Development District (RMDD) board meeting Economic Director Jim Gibson let the board know that a national hotel chain, Cobblestone Hotels, had requested information about coming to Rockdale. This chain will need a feasibility study to see if our location works for them, so the RMDD will do a feasibility study that can also be used for other hotels.

Gibson said this hotel chain has an odd business plan, and he doesn’t think he would suggest them in particular to the board, however any hotel chain will ask for a feasibility study so having one on hand will help with other hoteliers’ requests. The RMDD will ask the city for HOT funds to pay for this study next month.

Hotels in particular, as well as other businesses, often react to big announcements like SLR’s announcements about their manufacturing campus and gas plant on the former Alcoa property by asking about the feasibility of opening businesses in Rockdale.

More information was given on the new 220-home subdivision that would like to build on Texas Street in East Rockdale. The company and builder weren’t named, but the location was given as well as the fact that the land purchase hasn’t closed and isn’t expected to close until December or later.

Gibson also said that the Dollar Tree next to Walmart is set to open about this time next month.
