The Milam County Historical Commission will meet Monday, April 7, at the Kay Theater at 10 a.m. with speaker Dr. Sarah Chesney to learn about the Texas Archeological Society’s 2025 Summer Field School coming to Milam and Robertson Counties.

The Texas Archeological Society (TAS) has accepted an invitation of the El Camion Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail Association (El CaT) in partnership with the Tonkawa Tribe of Oklahoma to survey and record archeological sites in and around Red Mountain (also called Sugarloaf). And the public can be a part of it.

Registering (see below) will allow you to work with professional archeologists and local experts to identify and record Native American and colonial era archeological sites.

This is a great opportunity for people interested in a more in-depth lab activities than the organization can usually provide at field schools including sorting, data entry, analysis and photography which are all necessary to get collections to the next stage of curation.

Interested parties must register and enroll in the school. Register at txarch.org/ Field-School.

Volunteers are also needed. Email Joyce Connor at joyce@connor.net.
