The 2023 Milam and Burleson Counties Groundwater Summit has been set for Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Caldwell Civic Center. The summit is free and open to the public with lunch provided.
Speakers will discuss the current status of water in Texas. In addition, there will be a presentation about the Vista Ridge Project which has become a case study on groundwater rights and regulation in the state. There will be an update on Post Oak Savannah’s groundwater level monitoring and a historical look at the desired future conditions for POSGCD and the state.
The Master of Ceremonies Leah Martinsson is the executive director of Texas Alliance of Groundwater Districts (TAGD). She was a practicing water rights attorney for over 15 years and has represented the interests of a wide range of water users—from municipal water to agricultural well users, in addition to obtaining new water rights and protecting existing rights for her clients. She will also join one of the panels to provide an update on recent legislation which may affect Groundwater Conservation Districts, such as Post Oak Savannah.
Burleson County Judge Keith Schroeder will open this year’s summit and Milam County Judge Bill Whitmire will welcome attendees back to the second half of this year’s summit. POSGCD works closely with both judges and commissioners’ courts in water-related issues in the district.
Citizens of Milam and Burleson counties, as well as surrounding areas, can benefit from attending the Groundwater Summit. Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District organizes the event and invites groundwater experts from across Texas to come speak at the local level. It is a great opportunity for people to come and learn about the state’s requirements on local groundwater management and stay up to date on current groundwater issues, such as property rights and groundwater management. POSGCD, in conjunction with Texas A&M AgriLife, is again offering free well water testing for landowners in Burleson and Milam counties. Pick up your sampling packet at Burleson County AgriLife Extension or POSGCD office July 5-20, Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Easy-to-follow instructions will be included with the sampling packet. Results will be given out at the summit on Aug. 17 at 3 p.m.
For any questions, please contact the POSGCD office at 512-455-9900 or email admin@posgcd.org.
