Milam County is hoping to one day have a regional technical job-center.

County Judge Steve Young told commissioners about an Economic Development Administration grant program called Build Back Better Regional Challenge.

Young said the program is divided into two areas.

In Phase 1, selected entities will be awarded $500,000 in technical assistance funds.

“They are going to pay us to come together to figure out what we need and how we are going to go about it,” he said.

Phase 2 will give much larger grants to the groups selected to implement their plans.

Once the county has a plan, it would turn it over to the EDA for approval for the larger grant.

“Best thing I can think to do for the county is posture us for the future,” he said.

While the future can’t be predicted, Young said he sees technical jobs in the county’s future.

He mentioned that Bitcoin and data processing are here now, and solar is coming.

“I think that is going to draw other kinds of things we can’t see at this point,” he said.
