A 77-year-old Caldwell man died last Wednesday in the second Milam County highway fatality in less than a week, both on the same stretch of Texas 36.

According to the Department of Public Safety, Louis Smith was killed when his pickup was in collision with an 18-wheeler about 4:30 p.m. Feb. 20, about 3.5 miles south of Milano.

The DPS said Smith was headed southbound in a 2006 Dodge pickup when it attempted a left turn in front of an approaching 2002 Kenworth 18-wheeler driven by Carlos Gonzales, 26, of Florida.

The big rig struck the pickup on the driver side. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene while Gonzalez was not hurt, the DPS said.

Smith’s passenger, 46-year-old Louis Smith Jr, of Caldwell was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Bryan.

Two days earlier a Killeen teacher died as a result of injuries sustained Feb. 16 on the same stretch of highway, about two miles south of Milano on Texas 36.
