Milam County Retired School Personnel Association (MCRSPA) met in the home of Lue Wenzel of Cameron May 15 for a covered dish luncheon. Highlight was a review of activities of the past year.

Outgoing President Larson thanked members for the efforts given for all of the past years activities, noting “goodie baskets” given to each school district in the county; helping the Senior Expo as greeters and providing water/snacks for those getting glucose screening; and the “Books for Children” project. MCRSPA was again recognized by TRTA District 6 as the top unit in providing the most books for local schools. MCRSPA placed over 2100 books into the hands of children this past year.

MCRSPA members are active at District and State levels. Frank Middleton finished his tenure, as the District 6 president; Ted Hubert finished his term as Information and Protective Services chair; Susan Larson served as the District’s Retirement Education co-chair.

Kathleen Brockenbush will serve as the district 2nd VP; Jamie and Susan Larson will serve as district member benefits co-chairs. Jamie Larson serves as state president of the Texas Retired Teachers Foundation Board of Trustees.

Next meeting for MCRSPA will be at 11 a.m. June 7 at “Sho’ Nuff” Restaurant in Rockdale. Members will begin planning for next school year.

Any retired teacher, bus driver, secretary, cafeteria worker or other school personnel drawing a pension from TRS is eligible to become a member of TRTA and the local Milam County unit. Local and State dues are $45 and include opportunities to receive member benefits like discounts for hotels, car rentals, flowers, computers, supplemental insurance, travel insurance and more, plus access to TRTA’s legislative activities.

Memberships support the work of Executive Director Tim Lee and TRTA’s legislative team in Austin and Washington DC. With 88,000 members, TRTA is the largest teacher group in Texas that fights for teacher pensions and retirees’ health-care.

MCRSPA supports teachers, provides, health, and protective service information to members and participates in local projects that help all senior citizens. MCRSPA also coordinates email and letter writing campaigns to legislators during the Legislative session.
