Former commander of 1st Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, ret. Col. Mike Kershaw is slated to speak at the Milam County Memorial Ruck & Ride on Aug. 14 at the Cameron Fire Station at 11 a.m. to honor Gold Star families and reflect on the service of fallen heroes.
Kershaw led the special operations to rescue POW, Pvt. Jessica Lynch during the Iraq War. During the mission the Army Rangers, assisted by Marines, also recovered the remains of eight service members. Kershaw has a special tie to Cameron native and fallen hero, Master Sgt. Charles Price III. Price served under Kershaw's command in Desert Storm.
Veteran and adaptive athlete Kris Biggs will lead the eight-mile ruck at 9 a.m. from the Cameron Fire Station to Denio's Furniture and back to the station. Veteran and Combat Vets Motorcycle Association member Matthew Klatt will lead the ride at 10 a.m. from the Brookshire Bros. parking lot in Rockdale to the Cameron Fire Station. A lunch honoring Gold Star families is set for 11 a.m. at the station.
All participants are asked to park in the neighborhood behind the station and meet at the rear of the station.
Donations for lunch are being accepted by calling Bobbie Wiesman at 254-482-3112. Gold Start families are also may also call that number to confirm their attendance.
