CAMERON—A 29-year-old former Milano resident has pleaded guilty to injuring her child in an on-line sympathy scam.

Prosecutor Bill Torrey said Katelyn Christina Carnline, now listed as a Temple resident, entered a guilty plea to a charge of injury to a child last week in an open plea before 20th District Judge John Youngblood.

Torrey said sentencing and restitution will be determined by the court after a pre-sentence investigation and a sentencing hearing.

The hearing has been scheduled for Aug. 8.

SCAM—According to an arrest affidavit filed by Deputy Sheriff John Mendoza, the investigation determined Carnline started an on-line web page to raise funds for her allegedly critically ill child, suffering from a “rare genetic disorder.”

The sheriff’s department also said in Brazos County charges were filed against Carnline for starting an on-line donation web page falsely stating an older child was suffering from cancer.

Chief Deputy Chris White said the four-month old was examined at Dell Children’s Medical Center, after the baby exhibited poor weight gain.

NEGLECT—The affidavit states the examining RN said his medical opinion was that the child’s poor weight gain was “the direct result of physical neglect by the defendant.”

The child has been placed with other family members by Child Protective Services and is termed “healthy and thriving.” The affidavit states the baby weighed just over 10 pounds on March 1, 2017, but had improved to more than 15 pounds by April 25 of that year.

Carnline was originally charged with injury to a child with serious bodily injury” and “exploitation of a child.”

White said it’s alleged Carnline subjected the child to unnecessary medical procedures in an attempt to raise money.

However, that infant, after CPS placed that child with other family members, became healthy and thriving.

It was believed two people donated online, one for $100 and another for $50.
