In a unanimous decision on Monday, Jan. 8, the Board of Trustees of Rockdale ISD voted to extend the contract of Superintendent Dr. Denise Monzingo through the year 2027. The announcement follows a comprehensive evaluation of Dr. Monzingo’s leadership and accomplishments within the district.

Under Dr. Monzingo’s guidance, Rockdale ISD has achieved significant milestones in academic achievement, innovative programming and communit y engagement. The Board of Trustees expressed confidence in her ability to continue steering the district towards continued success.

Board of Trustees President Troy Zinn remarked, “Dr. Monzingo has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership and a steadfast commitment to the betterment of our s chool district. Her strategic v i sion and c o l l ab or a tive approach have resulted in tangible improvements that benefit our students, staff, and the community at large.”

Dr. Monz ingo, who assumed the role of superintendent in May of 2014, has been instrumental in implementing progressive educational initiatives, fostering a positive school culture and ensuring the district’s fiscal responsibility.

The contract extension reflects the board’s appreciation for Dr. Monzingo’s performance and the confidence they have in her ability to lead Rockdale ISD into the future. The extended contract will allow for continuity in the implementation of long-term strategic plans and initiatives aimed at providing the highest quality education to the students of Rockdale.

In other RISD trustee news, Tiffany Whitsel, Assistant Superintendent of State and Federal Funds, reported the Annual Discipline Report. Whitsel reviewed Discipline Counts for each campus and stated the district is within Results Driven Accountability (RDA).

Britain Pesak, CTE Director, presented the Course Guide for the 2024-2025 school year. Sequencing of high school math and science classes has changed; the district is offering additional courses for students that were not offered before.

Whitsel updated the board on the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) recommendations for the 2024-25 school year, including continuing the Youth Equipped to Succeed (YES) Program, for sexual health and bullying. Whitsel explained the programs to the board with information on the different components of the programs and how parents are notified and included. SHAC also voted to have narcan/naloxone available on all campuses, located in the nurses’ offices and at each AED. Training is provided for nurses, administrators and volunteers. Hidden in Plain Sight and Fentanyl Awareness will be presented to parents on January 22 at the RHS Library for drug abuse awareness.

The board approved the School Trustee Election Order and Notice for a May 4 election, jointly with the City of Rockdale and Rockdale Hospital District for early voting and election day voting. Place 1 (currently held by Jason Barcak) and Place 2 (currently held by Troy Zinn) are open for Rockdale ISD Board of Trustees.

The board approved the 2024-25 Rockdale High School Academic Standards Guide (course offerings) as presented.
