Filing for the 2020 primaries won’t begin until Nov. 9, but, according to announcements, there are at least two contested countywide races set for the March 3 Milam County Republican ballot.
Both involve incumbent office holders who will draw challengers.
SHERIFF—Craig Wise has announced he will run for sheriff.
Wise said he has worked in law enforcement for over 25 years.
He retired from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and was named Somerville Police Chief one year ago.
Wise has been a Cameron resident since 2012.
Incumbent Chris White has also announced he will run for re-election to what would be his first full term.
White, then serving as chief deputy, was appointed sheriff after the death of David Greene in July, 2018, then won an untested election that November to serve the remainder of Greene’s term.
PROSECUTOR—Incumbent Bill Torrey and current Cameron Police Chief Lonnie Gosch have announced their intentions to file for the office of Milam County/District Attorney.
Torrey was elected in 2012 and re-elected in 2016.
He was named Prosecutor of the Year by the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and has tried approximately 100 jury trials.
Gosch, who is also an attorney, began his career in criminal Justice in 1993 as a Municipal Peace Officer. In 1995 he joined the Milam County Sheriff’s Department.
Gosch has 26 years in law enforcement and 16 years civil and criminal experience as an attorney.
COMMISSIONER—
Ricky McCall has announced his intention to file in the GOP primary for Precinct 1 Commissioner.
McCall said he has served on the Buckholts ISD School Board since 2015, during which time the district went from being on the verge of being closed to an A rating from the Texas Education Agency.
Current Precinct 1 Commissioner is Richard “Opey” Watkins.
