Last week, we discussed Milam County’s unemployment rate and how we are experiencing one of the best labor markets in recent history.
We can get a little more detail on our unemployed population by looking at some other data. The Rockdale MDD subscribes to a data service which provides demographic data on our unemployed population.
First, nearly half of Milam County’s unemployment population is between the ages of 25 and 44. Nearly two-thirds of the unemployed population are in the age group of 25 to 54. This makes sense as this group is of prime working age and active in the workforce. The youth unemployment rate is very small as most of them are students and working part-time jobs or not in the workforce.
Most unemployed residents are male – this number starts to settle around 53% men and 47% women.
Finally, the racial unemployment rate breakdown is about 2.3% white, 1.5% for African American and 1.3% Hispanic. Overall, about 57% of unemployed residents are white, 38% are African American, and another 30% are Hispanic. I realize that these numbers add to over 100%. That’s the difference between how race versus ethnicity is measured by the government.
As we discussed last week, Milam County is experiencing one of the best labor markets in history, buoyed by what’s going on in Central Texas. The outlook is much rosier when we consider the new Advanced Manufacturing and Logistics Center going in on the former Alcoa property and all the jobs which will be created over there.
This is a very exciting time to be in Rockdale as we are going on this journey together.
