Gause VFD barbecue set Saturday at station

The Gause Volunteer Fire Department will hold a fund-raising barbecue from 11 a.m. to sold-out Saturday at the fire station.

Plates at the drivethrough only event are $12 and includes brisket, sausage, baked potato and salad.

Donations to a 50/50 fund-raiser are $5 per ticket or 5 for $20. Drawing will be after the barbecue.

Thorndale decreases city tax rate for 20-21

THORNDALE—City council members in Thorndale met last Wednesday and adopted a three-cent drop in the city tax rate.

Meeting at City Hall the council okayed a rate of 72 cents per $100 evaluation, down from the current 75-cent rate.

Commissioners meet for grants discussion

CAMERON—The Milam County Commissioners met Thursday to discuss applying for General Land Office grants to improve conditions on county roads in the Cameron and Gause areas.

Grant specifications require that the grant be for low income areas, generally meaning that the area must be under $50,000 in income.

“Of course, the more people the project will help, the higher it will score, which must be taken in consideration,” County Judge Steve Young said.

Commissioners will next meet at 10 a.m. Monday at in the courthouse in Cameron.

Animal shelter needs donations of items

Rockdale Animal Shelter needs laundry detergent, bleach, disinfectant, old blankets and towels.

Donations are accepted at the Beverly Drive shelter and at the police station.
