A Rockdale motel that’s very familiar to area law enforcement has been given 30 days to correct electrical code violations or face shutting down.
Lt. Stephen Goodrich of the Rockdale Police Department said the Budget Inn, 716 West Cameron (US 79) received a visit Tuesday from the Texas Fire Marshal’s Offi ce.
“They have filed a report and we understand if the owners do not comply with correcting violations identified by the Fire Marshal on Tuesday it will be shut down,” Goodrich said.
Goodrich said the visit was prompted by reports of unsafe conditions at the motel, which has been the site of arrests alleging drug activity.
“The Fire Marshal’s office said there were numerous safety violations found,” he added. “These included lack of fire extinguishers and problems with the electrical code.”
“It’s believed these do constitute violations of safety,” Goodrich added.
According to the Fire Marshal’s office, the motel owner has 30 days to correct all the problems and to produce the contractor who addressed them.
The owner is listed as Shamsher Gill.
Goodrich estimated the police department has made “hundreds” of trips to the motel in the past to investigate crimes, many for drug offenses.
Those offenses have been enhanced due to its proximity to Rockdale Elementary School.
A corner of that campus, at the Bowser and Bell intersection is less than 1,000 feet from motel property, making charges there eligible for enhancement.
