CAMERON—It’s been a busy May for the Milam County Railroad Museum, located in downtown Cameron.

Musician Pat Waters of “Drive Across Texas” fame stopped by to visit the museum and announced a summer camp for youngsters.

Waters videoed several locations in Milam County, according to museum spokesman Jamie Larson, including the 1895 Jail-Museum.

CAMP—Larson said the Milam County Railroad Museum is hosting a summer camp for boys and girls interested in learning more about railroads and model railroading.

The camp will be held July 10-12 and continue July 15-19 at the museum in downtown Cameron.

Classes will be from 9 a.m. to 12-noon each day.

“Participants must be between ages 8 and 18,” he said. “We encourage parent participation with the students but it is not required.”

He said volunteers are always appreciated.

Larson said Campers have the opportunity to learn about real-life railroading.

An instructor from Operation Lifesaver will highlight safe practices when encountering railroad equipment and trains.

“Our museum’s experienced modelers will share hands-on opportunities to learn how to build various aspects of a model train,” he said.

SKILLS—Larson said skills taught will include using modeling materials and tools safely, designing a model train layout, laying track, creating landscape, use of model vehicles and figures, and constructing models of buildings.

“Campers will also operate the trains and switches on the museum’s Old Town Cameron layout,” he said.

Campers will take a field trip to the 1906 Rock-dale International & Great Northern Depot-Museum and ride an Amtrak passenger train from Taylor to Temple.

In Temple, campers will visit the Temple Railroad Museum and the CentrA MOD model trains.

He said all participants will receive a camp T-shirt.

SIGNUP—Cost to participate in the camp is $40.
