Building on last year’s huge success, the Rock-dale Fall Music Festival will unreel Saturday at two Main Street locations.
It begins with a morning 5K/1K Halloween-themed “Zombie Run,” at the Kay Theatre and ends at a night street dance, with music by Brooke Graham.
In between there’s a chili cookoff, “wiener dog” races, a car show, washer tourney, food and craft booths, the annual P-TO carnival, a pumpkin patch and more.
Especially music. There’s live music all afternoon from the festival’s main stage at North Main ad East Milam, with many performers (see schedule page 8A), wrapping up with the street dance from 8:30 to 10 p.m.
Theres music at the Kay, too. The Communities in Concert Band will perform during the morning, which also features a pancake breakfast.
If you’re a square dancer, you can do-si-do over to the Kay during the afternoon where the restored vintage venue will be open from 2 to 4:30 p.m. for your specialty.
Fee is $10 per person or $15 per couple.
ZOMBIE RUN—The annual runs raise money for Kay Theatre restoration and maintenance and now carry Halloween themes.
The Kids 1K Trick or Treat Run begins at 8 a.m. with the 5K Zombie Run/Walk following at 8:30. Registration for the kids (ages 5 to 12) run is $15 through noon Friday and $18 on race day. For the 5K run it’s $ 25 through noon Friday and $30 on race day.
The registration fee includes a T-shirt and breakfast. You can register online at https://runsignup.com/Race/TX/Rockdale/KayTheater5KRunWalkandKidsDash.
Registration forms are available at The Reporter and the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce. For more information call 512-962-3040.
WIENER DOGS—A huge hit in 2018, wiener dog races will return, this time at Wolf Park.
Weiner dogs, of course, are dachshunds but your pet doesn’t have to be short-legged and low to the ground to participate. There’s a separate category for “wannabe wiener dogs,” essentially everything else. The races are exactly what they sound like. You line up the “athletes” and turn them loose. First one over the finish line wins. It’s a real crowd-pleaser.
There’s registration from 10 to 11:15 a.m., followed by racing at 12-noon.
CHILI, CARS—Chili cooking begins at 9 a.m. at Wolf Park with judging at 12:30 p.m.
Citizens National Bank’s downtown parking lots, and the surrounding streets will turn into “gasoline alley” with registration at 9:15 a.m. and the car show following from 10 to 2.
DAY OF FUN—There’s something going on all day around Wolf Park with food booths, vendors of all kinds and, of course, music.
The Fall Music Festival is sponsored by the Rock-dale Downtown Association, Rockdale Chamber of Commerce, Rockdale ISD P-TO, Kay Theatre Foundation and Pet Adoption Welfare Services (PAWS).
