The names of 236 American heroes—Milam County’s war dead in five wars— were read Monday morning as American Legion Post 358 hosted Rockdale’s annual Memorial Day.

Host organization for Rockdale’s Memorial Day service alternates each year between the Legion and VFW Post 6525.

Speaker was Rockdale City Manager, and U.S. Army veteran Chris Whittaker.

He related experiences from a posting to the Pentagon, serving as Casualty Notification Officer. Whittaker also participated in ceremonies as bodies of American soldiers were returned to American soil at Dover, Delaware.

PROGRAM—Legion Post Commander Jim McKimmey was master of ceremonies and gave the welcome. McKimmey served as a Green Beret in Vietnam.

Colors were posted by Hutto High School ROTC students and retired by Rockdale Girl Scouts.

Jim Foster conducted a Prisoner of War/Missing in Action ceremony.

Music was by the Communities in Concert Band. Members Terrell Webster and Lee Thomason played “Taps”.

Invocation was by Michelle Larkin and benediction by Foster.

NAMES—Names of wartime deceased were read by Rockdale High School FFA students Heather Murphy, Emma McMillan, Cady Barcak, Mallory McDaniel, Madeleine Moody and Arianna Eastridge.

A SALUTE TO THE ARMY—

U.S., Army veteran Cecil Calvin salutes as “The Army Goes Rolling Along,” the official song of that branch of the armed services is played by the Communities in Concert band during the Memorial Day Ceremony Monday at American Legion Carlyle Post 358, Always a highlight of the ceremony, anthems of all five service branches are played and veterans/active duty members stand. Those are official flags of all five service branches on the wall.
