The Matinee Musical Club hosted its District 4 annual meeting Saturday, April 22 in the fellowship hall of the First Presbyterian Church with district club members from Waco Euterpean Club and the Navasota Music Study Club joining. There were 19 participants in attendance.
Carol Gessner, outgoing District 4 President called the meeting to order. Rockdale’s MMC President Lisa Loewe welcomed all attendees and guests, followed by the NFMC (National Federation of Music Clubs) Invocation and the singing of the National Anthem, accompanied by Marie Guest on piano and Sparky Thomason on trumpet.
All attendees made their way to the sanctuary for several musical interludes. Mona Butala recited the TFMC poem “ Blessings”. Members of the Rising Star Baptist Church choir under the direction of MMC member JoAnn Bradford performed two songs. Elizabeth O’Keefe, Emma Schuch and Amelia Schuch, three piano students of Dixie Whitmore’s Jr. Music Club each performed two piano pieces. And finally, MMC member Melissa Shipley performed the beautiful “Ave Maria” by Schubert.
Returning to the fellowship hall we resumed the business portion of the meeting which included reports from each of the three district music clubs. A salad luncheon was prepared by the Rockdale members and a dessert provided by Dixie Whitmore to commemorate this year’s National Music Week, May 7-14, celebrating 100 years.
Before the final business, which was the installation of the newly elected 2023--2025 District Officers, MMC members Leah and Sparky Thomason performed a flute/ trumpet duet.
The meeting closed with a poem read by Mona Butala entitled “The End of the Day” and the singing of the NFMC Benediction, The Gift of Song. All participating clubs are members of the TFMC and the NFMC.
