Sheriff Chris White has announced Capt. Mike Clo-re has been promoted to the position of chief deputy.

That position has been vacant since county commissioners appointed White to replace the late David Greene in 2018.

White said the position remained vacant due to “budget concerns.”

Other promotions were announced as follows:

• Lt. John Mendoza promoted to captain.

• Patrol Sergeant John Vargas promoted to lieutenant.

• Deputy Bret Wier promoted to patrol sergeant.

• Corrections Officer Joshua Hughes promoted to jail corporal.

White said other department members were recently honored as follows:

• Deputies Nathan Law, Bret Wier, Lt. Bill Behler, Sgt. Vargas, Sgt. Sam Ferguson V, Sam Ferguson IV, Robert Wagnon, Lt. John Torres, Captain James Pratt, Dale Caswell and Mendoza, exceptional service awards for incident involving a man being sought by another county who came to Milam.

• Deputy Amberly Weyand given the Sheriff’s Honorable Service Award for her actions and initiative to organize collections after items lost in a fire.

• Deputy Ryan Blankemeier Life Saving Award.

• Deputy John Paniagua, Lt. Mendoza, Sgt. Sam Ferguson and Stephen Hanel Unit Citation Awards for helping to recover over $250,000 in property and equipment in an investigation which resulted in an arrest in August.
