After months of no director, litigation and an interim director, the MDD board of directors announced Monday at a meeting it has named a new director who will start work July 6.

Jim Gibson will be in the office of the Rockdale Municipal Development District on Main Street to start his role as the new executive director just in time to help with next fiscal year’s budget.

At a meeting June 10, the MDD board met in executive session to interview Gibson and one other candidate for the director’s position, according to current interim director Uryan Nelson.

During the meeting, the board approved an offer to Gibson, who was the assistant city manager/economic development director in the city of Center at the time.

Since 2007 Gibson has served in city administration management positions and had served as the economic development director for Center for about 11 years.

“Gibson’s education in economic development, coupled with his experience, are what set him apart from other candidates and are the primary reason he was selected to fill this position,” Nelson wrote in an email.

Gibson has a master’s degree in public administration and a bachelor’s degree in political science.

He is also a certified economic developer through the International Economic Development Council, Nelson said.

Gibson will be responsible for developing an economic development strategy, developing the annual budget and ultimately fostering economic advancement for Rockdale, according to Nelson.

The board voted to authorize $5,000 to help Gibson make the move to Rockdale from Center in East Texas.

The board also voted to authorize the MDD administrative assistant’s application to be a notary public.
