The board of directors for Post Oak Savanna Groundwater Conservation District announced a new program for plugging unused wells at their last meeting.

Abandoned water wells pose a safety risk and have the potential to contaminate groundwater in several ways, thus plugging these wells protects groundwater quality and the health of aquifers.

Because of this, the board of directors at POSGCD created the Well Plugging Assistance Program to encourage landowners who have unused or abandoned wells on their property to safely plug them but not have to bear the burden of that expense.

Due to the increase in prices associated with goods and services, the board voted during their March 14 meeting to increase assistance of up to $3,500 for each abandoned and registered well within the district.
