Campus Councils seek volunteers for openings

The Rockdale ISD has openings for the following places on Campus Education Councils:

Elementary, two parent representatives; one business representative; intermediate, one business, one community; junior-high, two parent, one community; high school one each, parent, community and business.

Representatives are selected by principals and other council members.

Councils serve as advisory groups to principals but have no regulatory powers.

None may be employees of the district. Parent reps must have students enrolled in the RISD, community reps must reside in the district, be at least 18 and cannot be the parent of a student enrolled in the district.

Business reps must own or operate a business, but the business does not have to be in the RISD.

Oct. 5 is the deadline to pick up, or request, an application from the RISD Central Office or any campus office.

‘Zombies’ needed for 5K Run on October 6th

High school students are being sought to portray “zombies” for the Kay Theatre 5K Run on Oct. 6, an opportunity for students to earn community service hours.

Time is 7 to 10 a.m.

‘Wiener Dogs’ sought for Oct. 6 race event

Owners of “wiener dogs and wannabe wiener dogs” can now sign up to enter the wiener dog races on Oct 6 on the north side of the Kay Theatre.

Registration for the 70-foot course is from 10 to 11:15 a.m., “boot camp” dogs practice for free from 11:15 to 11:45 and races begin at 12-noon.

Entry fee is $20 per dog, $25 on race day. Forms are available at Sabal Dental, Rainbow Courts, Rockdale PAWS and Rockdale Fall Festival Facebook pages.

American Legion Post set to host VSO officer

American Legion Carlyle Post 358 will host a presentation by Milam Veterans Service Officer Ken Janicek, at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct 1 at the Post Home, 2534 North FM 487.

Janicek assists veterans with claims, issues and questions about potential benefits.

He will discuss veterans benefits and how to apply for them.

Thorndale lowers city tax rate on Monday

THORNDALE—The Thorndale City Council lowered the city tax rate by seven cents in a special session Monday.

The council set a 75-cent rate. Previous rate was 82 cents.

In other action, the council okayed amendments to the 2-17-18 budget and accepted the resignation of Police Chief Martin Jackson who has retired.

Drug awareness topic for Oct. 9th program

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, and the Rockdale ISD, are partnering to host an Alcohol & Drug Trends Awareness program at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in the Rockdale Intermediate School cafeteria.

The special presentation will follow the Rockdale P-TO meeting scheduled for that evening.

All parents and guardians are invited to attend.

Allen Sanders, RISD community relations director, said the program will provide a chance for “parents to become aware of the many alcohol and drug trends facing our youth today and to recognize the signs of alcohol and drug-related problems facing them.”

Tractor Supply supports 4-H with ‘Clover’ offer

Tractor Supply stores are supporting 4-H clubs with a semiannual program that has provided millions of dollars in scholarships in past years.

From Oct. 3-14, customers may purchase a paper clover—the signature emblem of 4-H—for a donation during checkout or by making a purchase online.

Since its start in 2010, the partnership has generated more than $14 million in funding. The spring 2018 effort raised more than $965,000 and impacted more than 14,000 students, according to the company.

Fall Fest scheduled for October 6th in Davilla

DAVILLA—The annual Davilla Community Fall Fest is set for 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 6 at the center, 20803 North FM 487.

Events include many games, lots of food, a silent auction and a fund raiser for a handmade Texas flag throw quilt, wooden bench and many other items.

Benefit ahead for brain tumor patient Oct. 28

A benefit for Roxli Doss—10-year-old granddaughter of James and Denice Doss, and daughter of Scott and Gena Doss—is set for 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 28 at the KC Hall.

Barbecue plates will be sold beginning at 11 a.m.

There’s a live auction at 1 p.m. and rolling silent auction throughout the day.

Activities also include a washer tourney, Roxli’s jewelery “go fish” and music by the Communities in Concert Band.
