DPS reports one minor accident in Milano

A one-vehicle accident happened Sept. 7 at 4:45 a.m., on U.S. 79 east of Church Street, according to a report from the Department of Public Safety.

Larry Smith was not injured in the early morning crash that happened after he fell asleep at the wheel, a DPS spokeswoman said.

South Milam VFDs called to four fires

Fire calls for the past week dispatched to South Milam County volunteer fire departments from the Rockdale Police Department included:

• 2:31 a.m. Sept. 1—Loud sound and flash reported at Rockdale General Store, Rockdale VFD and Oncor Energy responded and found a blown transformer.

• 11:48 a.m. Friday, small fire behind Tortuga’s Mexican Restaurant, 1121 West Cameron (US 79), Rockdale VFD.

• 8:31 p.m. Friday, possible structure fire at end of Rice Street, Rockdale VFD responded and reported an out-of-control burn.

• 7:10 p.m. Sunday, motor home on fire, one mile east of Milano off US 79, Milano VFD.

Voter registration set for volleyball game

Representatives from the Milam County Elections Department will be at the Caldwell-Rockdale volleyball contest Tuesday (Sept. 15) to sign up voters.

Hours are 4 to 7 p.m.

Voters may also sign up between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the county clerk’s Cameron office, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays.

The county clerk’s office continues to hold voter registrations throughout the county prior to election day Nov. 3.

Oct. 5 is the final day of registration to be eligible to vote in that election.

Alcoa retirees cancel September meeting

The September meeting of Rockdale Alcoa retirees has been canceled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

That meeting would have been held on Sept. 17, according to Doug Williams, president of Rockdale Alcoa retirees.

“We are going to try and have the December meeting, scheduled for Dec. 17,” Williams said.

First CTFB distribution serves 714 on Thursday

The first September visit of the Central Texas Food Bank Thursday served 305 households with 714 individuals. Next one is Sept. 17.
