Surplus food giveaway Thursday at KC Hall

Central Texas Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry will host a distribution at 9 a.m. Thursday, at the KC Hall, according to Denise Sifuentes, spokesperson.

“Since the distribution relies totally on volunteer help, volunteers will be needed and greatly appreciated,” she said

Central Texas Food Bank distributions are held the third Thursday of each month.

“Clients are asked to bring sacks, boxes, or other receptacles,” Sifuentes said.

Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, she said.

Sunday washer pitching tourneys benefit ACS

Washer tournaments benefiting the American Cancer Society are held each second and fourth Sunday of the month beginning at 5 p.m. at the Apache Pass Ice House.

Tourneys will be held through September. Registration starts at 4 p.m. and fee is $20 per team, double elimination. Prizes are awarded to the top three teams.

T-SHIRTS—Orders for gray or black T-shirts benefiting the ACS are being taken. Prices: $15 (short sleeve (district brand) and $20 (long-sleeve port and company performance brand). Sizes are available from small to 6XL.

RISD board gets update on football field work

Rockdale ISD school trustees got an update on construction of the new football field during a monthly session Monday in the Central Administration Building.

Lance Weidler, RISD maintenance director said sub-grade has been completed, drainage work is underway and the 50-yard -line has been delineated. (There was a photo in the July 5 Reporter).

Piers are going up on the home side (west side) and the track is taking shape.

The field is being constructed without a tax increase or bond issue.

One fire call in week for South Milam VFDs

There was one fire call during the past week dispatched from the Rockdale Police Station.

That was at 3:01 p.m. July 10 when the Thorndale VFD was dispatched to a reported fire at FM 3061 and FM 486 at San Gabriel.

That turned out to be an unreported controlled burn.

Troopers called to three South Milam accidents

DPS State Troopers were called to three accidents in South Milam County during the past week.

Trooper Michael McHale said a load in a tractor-trailer rig operated by Reginald Freeman of Houston came into contact with the Union Pacific Railroad bridge over Texas 36 in Milano at 6:55 a.m. July 10.

There were no injuries.

Trooper Erik Gaston said a vehicle operated by Dominique O’Banan of Thorndale overturned at 12:11 p.m. July 12 on FM 486 south of CR 436.

The Thorndale Volunteer Fire Department and an AMR ambulance crew were called out. The driver was taken to Seton Hospital.

Extensive damages were reported.

Major damages were also reported at 11:17 p.m. July 12, according to Trooper Ernest DelBosque at an accident in which a truck rolled over on CR 358 near CR 353.

Driver was listed as Wendell Shepherd of Texarkana.

Steelworkers slate annual picnic Aug. 4th

United Steelworkers of America Local 4895 will continue a summer tradition by hosting its annual picnic.

The get-together is set for 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at The Ranch, 415 West US 79.

David Edmonds, spokesperson and former Local 4895 president, said a barbecue lunch will be served.

Important summer dates for RHS Band

The Rockdale High School Big Blue Band program is gearing up for another school term, beginning with marching season, and here are important summer dates, according to Adrian Acevedo, director:

• Full Band Summer Band Camp—July 23-Aug. 6, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., band hall/practice field.

• Full Band Summer Band Camp—Aug. 7-16, 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., band hall/practice field.

• Marching Band Parent Meeting—Aug. 7, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., band hall.

Color Guard camp concluded Wednesday (July 18).
