Dr. Weed retirement reception set Aug. 10

“Rockdale’s doctor” is retiring.

Dr. John M. Weed III who returned to his home town to begin his medical practice 44 years ago this month will be honored with a retirement reception Friday, Aug. 10, at the Patterson Center.

Hours are 5 to 8 p.m.

Dr. Weed is a native Rockdalian and a 1964 RHS graduate.

He got his undergraduate degree at Texas Tech, went on to the University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston and did his internship at John Peter Smith Hospital.

THS graduate dies in tractor accident

THRALL—A 2015 Thorndale High School graduate died Saturday after the tractor on which he was working came into contact with a power line, according to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Department.

Funeral services for 20-year-old Jacob Biarhe would have turned 21 the next day—are set for 10 a.m. Thursday in Thorndale’s St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Williamson County Sheriff Robert Chody said the death was by electrocution.

Steelworkers slate annual picnic Aug. 4th

United Steelworkers of America Local 4895 will continue a summer tradition by hosting its annual picnic.

The get-together is set for 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at The Ranch, 415 West US 79.

David Edmonds, spokesperson and former Local 4895 president, said a barbecue lunch will be served.

Teens injured Sunday morning in rollover

Two 18-year-olds were taken to Baylor Scott & White in Temple following a one-vehicle rollover on FM 487 Sunday near the Beverly Drive intersection just south of the Rockdale city limits.

State Trooper Michael McHale said Alyssa May-berry and Marvin Wyatt were passengers in a vehicle operated by 18-year-old Dylan David of Rock-dale.

McHale said David refused treatment at the scene.

According to the DPS the accident occurred at 5:55 a.m.

Important summer dates for RHS Band

The Rockdale High School Big Blue Band program is gearing up for another school term, beginning with marching season, and here are important summer dates, according to Adrian Acevedo, director:

• Full Band Summer Band Camp—July 23-Aug. 6, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., band hall/practice field.

• Full Band Summer Band Camp—Aug. 7-16, 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., band hall/practice field.

• Marching Band Parent Meeting—Aug. 7, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., band hall.

Color Guard camp concluded Wednesday (July 18).

Fire calls listed for South Milam VFDs

Fire calls for South Milam County volunteer fire departments, dispatched from the Rock-dale Police Department during the past week were listed as follows:

• 8:26 p.m. July 17, small grass fire in field on West Salty, Thorndale VFD.

• 7:37 p.m. Saturday, oil spill near City National Bank, US 79, Thorndale VFD.

• Rockdale VFD and AMR responded to one-vehicle rollover on FM 487 at 5:55 a.m. Sunday. (See story this page).

Milano trustees slate meeting for Thursday

MILANO—School trustees in the Milano ISD will meet in regular session at 7 p.m. Thursday in the high school library.

Agenda items include conducting the annual superintendent evaluation and considering the superintendent’s contract.

Thorndale ISD hears about STAAR scores

THORNDALE—School trustees in Thorndale gathered last week and heard Supt. Adam Ivy report on State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) scores.

Ivy said in 18 of 23 testing areas TISD was ahead of the state average and in the other five areas principals and teachers were making adjustments to address deficits even before the scores were released.

In other business, the board heard proposed revisions to several local policies to accommodate the recent creation of a Guardian program within the Thorndale ISD.
