Hospital district votes to maintain tax rate

The Rockdale Hospital District’s (RHD) tax rate will remain at 6.5 cents for another year. Karolyn Puccio, hospital board president, said the board member voted unanimously at the July 26 meeting to not raise the rate from its current number.

The hospital district will meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 16 in the Hospital Board Room to adopt the proposed tax rate and approve a resolution stating that fact.

Meeting agendas are posted at the Milam County Clerk’s office, City Hall and the hospital complex. As with all of the district’s meetings, the public is invited to attend, and public input is welcomed.

The district is mandated by law to help provide indigent care to the citizens. The revenue derived from the tax is used to support Health-Point’s clinic, as this clinic provides indigent care to Milam County residents.

Historical grant applications available

Due to a donation from the Hotel Occupancy Tax funds by the city of Rockdale to the Milam County Historical Commission’s Preservation Grant Fund, a Rockdale Preservation Grant is now available for historic preservation.

The applications are available at Rainbow Courts Motel Office, the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library or the MCHC website.

School supply sales tax state holiday in Aug. 6-8

The state’s sales tax holiday is this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

State law exempts sales tax on qualified items — such as clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks — priced below $100, saving shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.

Apparel and school supplies that may be purchased tax-free are listed on the comptroller’s website at TexasTaxHoliday.org.

Texas’ sales tax holiday weekend has been an annual event since 1999, allowing consumers to save millions of dollars in state and local sales taxes each year. The comptroller’s office estimates that shoppers will save an estimated $107.3 million in state and local sales tax during this sales tax holiday.

Governor speaks at DPS graduation on Friday

Gov. Greg Abbott on Friday delivered the keynote address to the largest graduating class in the history of the Texas Department of Public Safety in the ceremony at Great Hills Baptist Church in Austin. During his remarks, Governor Abbott congratulated the graduating members of the DPS A-2021 class and thanked them for their service to the Lone Star State.

Among the 145 new state troopers are 40 U.S. military veterans, 22 with prior law enforcement experience, and the most women as DPS recruits in state history.

“Texas is exceptional because of the people who call our state home, and it is your fellow Texans that you have sworn to protect and serve as you join the most elite state law enforcement agency in the nation,” the governor said.

“On behalf of the Lone Star State, we are so grateful for your sacrifice and commitment to serving your communities. You will face challenges along the way, but never forget that what you do matters,” he said.

“It matters to the over 29 million Texans who depend on you every single day to keep our communities safe,” he said. “And I have no doubt that after today, our state will be made safer by the brave men and women in this room.”
