Steelworkers slate picnic for Saturday

United Steelworkers of America Local 4895 will continue a summer tradition by hosting its annual picnic.

The get-together is set for 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Saturday at The Ranch, 415 West US 79.

David Edmonds, spokesperson and former Local 4895 president, said a barbecue lunch will be served.

Dr. Weed retirement reception set Aug. 10

“Rockdale’s doctor” is retiring.

Dr. John M. Weed III who returned to his home town to begin his medical practice 44 years ago this month will be honored with a retirement reception Friday, Aug. 10, at the Patterson Center.

Hours are 5 to 8 p.m.

Dr. Weed is a native Rockdalian and a 1964 RHS graduate.

First Friday mixer ahead at city library

The annual First Friday get-together is set from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the city library.

Light refreshments will be served and the event is free.

All interested persons are invited to attend.

Free fruit-vegetables Thursday at KC Hall

The monthly distribution of fruit and vegetables is set for 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the KC Hall parking lot. The monthly free distribution is held the first Thursday of each month.

Blood drive scheduled Aug. 12th in Thorndale

THORNDALE—A Baylor Scott & White blood drawing is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 12-noon Sunday, Aug. 3 at St. Paul Lutheran Church and School in Thorndale.

Spokesperson Stacy Irwin said a photo ID is required to donate.

Blood donors during August will receive vouchers for a pint of ice cream and stars and stripes sunglasses.

Big Blue, RJH Bands earn places in contests

Three summer music contests—evaluating recorded music—have concluded and both high school and junior-high bands have placed, according to directors Adrian Acevedo and Marco Estrada.

The Big Blue (high school) Band was fifth in the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) Outstanding performance Series 3A.

The RJH Symphonic Band was fifth in its category.

The junior-high band was 11th in the Texas Music Educators Association State Band Honor Contest.

Jones Scholarship Run Sept 29th in Caldwell

CALDWELL—The first Sunflower/Melodie Hope Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund 5K Run/Walk and Kids 1-Mile Fun Run/ Walk is set for Saturday Sept. 29 at Caldwell’s Davidson Creek Park.

It’s in honor of the late Melodie Jones who died in a US 79 accident.

Registration is $30 for the 5K run and $25 for the kids run.

On-line registration is at www.melodiesmeow.com. Same-day registration is 7:30 to 8:15 a.m.

The kids run starts at 8:30 and the Sunflower Fun Run at 9.
