Sales tax holiday set Thursday to Sunday
Texas’ annual sales tax holiday begins Friday, and goes through midnight.
According to the Comptroller’s office, during the holiday, customers can buy most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks (sold for less than $100) tax free from a Texas store or from an online or catalog seller doing business in Texas.

‘Roman Holiday’ film Aug. 18 at Kay Theatre
Milam County retired School Personnel’s next movie night at the Kay Theatre will be Saturday, Aug. 18.
“Roman Holiday,” starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn, and directed by William Wyler, will be shown, according to Jamie Larson, spokesperson.
Admission is $5 per person and movie time is 7 p.m.
The Kay is a fully-restored 1940s-era theatre and community center at the Main-Davilla corner.
Rockdale tax offices closing for next week
The Rockdale Tax Office Substation branch in the One-Stop Center will be closed next week, Aug. 13-17.
Tax Collector Sherry Mueck said the tax office with four employees, two each in Rockdale and Cameron offices and when employees are off or training, vacation or personal time, the Rockdale office is closed in order to keep the main office in Cameron open.
Other scheduled closings for the Rockdale office are Aug. 27-31, Sept. 10-14 and Nov. 12-16.
Legion plans turkey shoot August 19th
American Legion Carlyle Post 358 will hold a turkey shoot on Sunday, Aug. 19, at the post home, 2535 North FM 487.
Shooting competition, and a meal, begins at 11 a.m.
Cost is $5 per round and there will be 12 shooters per round. Winners get 50 percent of the take per round.
Maximum barrel length is 32 inches, including the choke.

Dawson medical fund raiser set at The Ranch
A medical expenses fund raiser for Norma Dawson is set for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Ranch, 415 West US 79.
Barbecue plates will be $10, shirts $15 and $18 and there will be silent and live auctions.

RJH symphonic band sets camp Aug. 14-15
Rockdale Junior-High School Symphonic Band will host a summer band camp from 9 a.m. to 12-noon Aug. 14 and 15 at the RJH Band Hall, according to Marco Estrada, RJH director.
“This is for all seventh and eighth graders who will be in symphonic band this year,” he said. “Bring instruments and music.”
Peace Lutheran site for 2018 4-H Banquet
The Peace Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in Rockdale will be the site for the 2018 Milam County 4-H Banquet, according to County Agent Micah Holcombe.
The banquet begins at 3 p.m.
Holcombe had said last week the banquet would be held in Rockdale and a location would be announced soon.
One flown from rural site after accident
The driver of a vehicle which left CR 457, near County Road 459, was flown to Baylor Scott & White Monday afternoon, according to Trooper Jacob Luna.
He said Destry Young, 53, of Thorndale, was involved in the one-vehicle accident. Damages were termed extensive and the Thorndale VFD responded.
No injuries were reported in a 12:15 p.m. July 31 accident on US 77 southwest of FM 908.
Drivers were listed as Melissa Pool of Bells and Vernon Thrasher Sr. of Rockdale.
Vehicle damages were listed as moderate.
New phone protocol for RISD this fall
Numbers of all Rock-dale ISD facilities will remain the same when school starts in two weeks but there’s a different protocol for accessing extensions, according to Pam Kaufmann, assistant principal.
Call the numbers you always call but from there, at each campus:
• Press 1 for a name directory
• 2 for attendance.
• 3 for school nurse.
• 4 for counselor.
• 5 for registrar.
• 6 for principal’s office.
• 7 for band (high school only).
• 8 for athletics (high school only).
• 9 to replay the message.
