One killed in accident near Cameron Monday

A 65-year-old Cameron man died in a head-on crash Monday night just north of the Cameron city limits.

According to the DPS, Joe Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Sam Berry shortly after the 9:02 p.m. collision on US 77.

Investigators said Lewis’s pickup crossed the highway’s center stripe and was in collision with a box truck operated by 36-year-old Mopati Malepa of Chicago. He was taken to Little River-Cameron for treatment.

Dawson medical fund raiser set for Saturday

A medical expenses fund raiser for Norma Dawson is set for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Ranch, 415 West US 79.

Barbecue plates will be $10, shirts $15 and $18 and there will be silent and live auctions.

Surplus food giveaway Thursday at KC Hall

Central Texas Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry will host a distribution at 9 a.m. Thursday, at the KC Hall, according to Denise Sifuentes, spokesperson.

“Since the distribution relies totally on volunteer help, volunteers will be needed and greatly appreciated,” she said

Central Texas Food Bank distributions are held the third Thursday of each month.

“Clients are asked to bring sacks, boxes, or other receptacles,” Sifuentes said.

Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, she said.

City, county schedule hearings on tax rate

Hearings on new proposed tax rates begin next week with the county’s on Monday and the City of Rockdale’s on Tuesday.

The city is proposing to keep the current 91.18 rate. Public hearings are set for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and the same time on Monday, Aug. 27, both at city hall.

Milam County is proposing a three-cent hike, from 70 to 73 cents.

Hearing dates, all at 6:30 p.m., are scheduled as follows:

• Monday (Aug. 20), courthouse, Cameron.

• Tuesday (Aug. 21), Thorndale Chamber of Commerce.

• Aug. 22, Buckholts Community Center.

• Aug. 23, One-Stop Center, Rockdale.

• Aug. 38, Milano Fire Station.

City of Thorndale eyes 75-cent tax rate in 18-19

City council member in Thorndale met in regular session last Wednesday and proposed a 75-cent tax rate for 2018-19.

That’s the same as the current rate.

Public hearings on the tax rate are set for 5:30 p.m. Aug. 29 and 5:20 p.m. Sept. 12, both at City Hall.

The council also set a public hearing on the budget a5 5:15 p.m. Sept. 12.

Both the budget and tax rate will be adopted during the Sept. 12 council session at City Hall.

In other business, the council banned commercial trucks in parks and residential streets.
