Appellate court upholds cattle theft conviction
AUSTIN—The Third Court of Appeals has upheld a 2016 theft conviction in 20th District Court.
William James Crennan had appealed the 2016 jury trial which led to his being assessed a 15-year prison term.
The appellate court ruled “there was no reversible error in the judgment of conviction.”
Crennan’s conviction for theft ($100,000 to $200,000) was for stealing cattle, the court noted.
County continuing hearings on tax rate
Hearings on new proposed tax rates continue this week in Rockdale and Milano.
Milam County is proposing a three-cent hike, from 70 to 73 cents.
Hearing dates, at 6:30 p.m., are scheduled as follows:
• Thursday, One-Stop Center, Rockdale.
• Tuesday, Milano Fire Station.
Jones Scholarship Run Sept 29th in Caldwell
CALDWELL—The first Sunflower/Melodie Hope Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund 5K Run/Walk and Kids 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk is set for Saturday Sept. 29 at Caldwell’s Davidson Creek Park.
It’s in honor of the late Melodie Jones who died in a US 79 accident.
Registration is $30 for the 5K run and $25 for the kids run.

The kids run starts at 8:30 and the Sunflower Fun Run at 9.
Fall Music Festival set downtown on Oct. 6th
The first Rockdale fall Music Festival is set for Saturday, Oct. 6 in downtown Rockdale.
Activities will center on Wolf Park, corner of Main and Milam, and will include live music, carnival booths, a pumpkin patch, vintage cars and campers, chili cookoff and more.
The day will also feature the annual Kay Theatre 5-K run and walk, domino and washer tourneys and tours of the historic I&GN Depot Museum.

PAWS places 11 more dogs with new owners
Rockdale PET Adoption Welfare Services (PAWS) has placed 11 more dogs with new owners out-of-state.
A caravan left Rockdale early last Wednesday morning with shelter dogs cared for by PAWS, destined for homes in the northern U. S.
That makes 23 dogs in two weeks relocated by PAWS through its connections. Recently 12 others were transported to Washington state and new homes.
Citywide garage sale weekend Aug. 31-Sept. 2
Rockdale’s annual citywide garage sale will be a three-day event in 2018.
Garage sales will unreel in all areas of town from Friday, Aug. 31, to Sunday, Sept. 2.

Fire hydrant work may trigger water problems
City of Rockdale crews will be maintaining fire hydrants in the far western portion of town through Monday, according to City Manager Chris Whittaker.
He said residents between Childress Street and Walmart may experience discolored water and “low to no pressure.”

Conservation partners set work group meeting
BELTON—The U.S. Agriculture Dept. Natural Resources Conservation Service will host a three-county local work group meeting, including Milam, on Thursday.
Time is 10 a.m. to 12-moon at the Bell County Annex, 1608 North Main in Belton.
Purpose is an update on recent conservation efforts and collect public input.
