‘Early out’ at campus due to city water break

Rockdale Elementary School students got an unexpected “early release” Tuesday as an adjacent city water main broke.

Water was disconnected while repairs were made.

First Friday coffee set for library at 8:30 a.m.

The monthly First Friday coffee get-together at the city library is set for 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday.

It’s free and light refreshments will be served.

The monthly programs are get acquainted opportunities for all interested persons.

Substitute training set for teaching in RISD

A mandator y training for all new RISD substitute teachers will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday Sept. 20, in the Rockdale ISD Conference Room, 529 West Davilla.

Training will include processes for the automated substitute service system Rockdale ISD has implemented. Individuals interested in becoming substitute teachers must attend this training in order to qualify for the substitute list.

Applic a nt s must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and provide consent to a criminal background check.

Substitute applications can be picked up at the RISD Central Office prior to the training.

Jones Scholarship Run Sept 29th in Caldwell

CALDWELL—The first Sunf lower/Melodie Hope Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund 5K Run/Walk and Kids 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk is set for Saturday, Sept. 29,at Caldwell’s Davidson Creek Park.

It’s in honor of the late Melodie Jones who died in a US 79 accident.

Registration is $30 for the 5K run and $25 for the kids run.

On-line registration is at www.melodiesmeow.com.Same-day registration is 7:30 to 8:15 a.m.

The kids run starts at 8:30 and the Sunflower Fun Run at 9.

Fall Music Festival set downtown on Oct. 6th

The first Rockdale fall Music Festival is set for Saturday, Oct. 6 in downtown Rockdale.

Activities will center on Wolf Park, corner of Main and Milam, and will include live music, carnival booths, a pumpkin patch, vintage cars and campers, chili cookoff and more.

The day will also feature the annual Kay Theatre 5-K run and walk, domino and washer tourneys and tours of the historic I&GN Depot Museum.

Annual meeting ahead for Minerva Center

The annual meeting for the Minerva Community Center is set for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 25.

Those attending will elect a new trustee and discuss repairs and maintenance among other items.

An agenda item will be the 58th annual Minerva Homecoming which is set for 12-noon Oct. 7 with a brief Minerva Cemetery meeting and a covered dish lunch.

CALDWELL—The first Sunflower/Melodie Hope Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund 5K Run/Walk and Kids 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk is set for Saturday, Sept. 29, cial session Thursday at the MDD office voted to repeal a sales exemption for telecommunications services within the district.

Kara Clore, executive director, said receipts from the sale of telecommunications services will now be subject for the local sales and use tax.

In other business, the MDD voted to approve its budget for 2018-19.

Benefit ahead for brain tumor patient Oct 28

A benefit for Roxli Doss—10-year-old granddaughter of James and Denice Doss, and daughter of Scott and Gena Doss—is set for 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 28 at the KC Hall.

Roxli has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. The benefit is to help the family with medical expenses termed “catastrophic.”

Barbecue plates with brisket, sausage, sausage “fixings,” dessert and tea, will be sold beginning at 11 a.m.

There’s a live auction at 1 p.m. and rolling silent auction throughout the day.

Activities also include a washer tourney, Roxli’s jewelery “go fish” and music by the Communities in Concert Band.
