National Day of Prayer May 3 at Murray Street
The Rockdale Ministerial Alliance will host a National Day of Prayer Service from 12-noon to 1 p.m. May 3 at Murray Street Church of Christ.
Pastors Dr. Dennis Brooks, Royal Johnson and Matt Higginbotham will be on the program.
“Our format is much like Holy Week, churches together are providing lunch, a different pastor will read a relevant scripture connected to the prayer topic, then a pastor will pray over the three topics, country, community and church,” Rev. Ken Ansell, Alliance president, said.
He said a light lunch will be served and program is open to all denominations.
Courthouse gets grant for drainage problem
Milam County has received an emergency grant, totaling $60,012, to address a drainage problem at its Victorian Era courthouse.
Lynn Young, spokesperson for the Milam County Historical Commission, said the county had applied for the grant to install a French drain to mitigate the rising damp in the lower level “which is deteriorating the historic plaster.”
She said the county will have to match the grant. “Of course it will seek bids and, hopefully, the work can be done for much less,” she said.
“The Historical Commission is grateful to Stan Graves, Senior Principal for Architexas for his invaluable assistance in assisting with the grant proposal,” she said.
“We are also very appreciative of the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program of the Texas Historical Commission for the generous support,” Young said.
MARC Run changing dates for 2019 event
Starting in 2019, the Milam Adult Resource Center (MARC) Run will change its date from the second Saturday in April to the second Saturday in June.
“Thanks to all our local supporters and friends,” Charles Starr, spokesman for Bad to the Bone Riders, which sponsors the annual run, said.
“There have simply been so many fund raisers in March, April and May,” he said. “Some of these have been without consideration of other fund raisers that have happened on the same date for years.”
National Train event slated for ‘Old Cameron’
John Johnson’s “Old Cameron” scale model, complete with running trains, will host an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 12.
It is located in the Milam County Railroad Museum at 101 West Main in downtown Cameron.
“Lemonade and cookies will be served,” Jamie Larson, spokesman, said. “But we appreciate your donations.”
Larson said there have been additions to the layout which most people haven’t seen. Those include Sugarloaf Mountain and the locally famous “Dinky” train.
“When fully operational up to four engineers will be able to operate trains on the layout,” he said.
Larson said when volunteers were working with trains and buildings during the 2017 Christmas season, they noticed some sections were sagging and trains were operating erratically.
This led to a major upgrade. “We are now ready to begin showing off again,” he said.
Larson said plans are to have a miniature model of the old Milano Depot in the future.
